Accidents Happen

Film festival hosts Academy Award-winner Geena Davis' new film "Accidents Happen" on March 9
Celebrate the film festival with a member appreciation night screening and Arizona premiere

The award-winning dark comedy "Accidents Happen" makes a stop in Sedona for its Arizona Premiere on Tuesday, March 9. The film is being presented by the Sedona International Film Festival in this one-night-only special engagement as part of its Tuesday Cinema Series. There will be two screenings of the film at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. at Harkins Sedona Six Theatres.

"We are so proud to be presenting Geena Davis' new film in celebration of our biggest film festival in our history," said Patrick Schweiss, film festival director. "It is our way of saying thank you to our members and this entire community for the support they've shown to our film festival this entire year. We are very grateful."

On warm summer evenings in suburban 1980s Connecticut, manicured lawns are maintained by spinning circles of water from churning sprinklers while distant urban rumbles are kept at bay by rings of concrete freeways.
Yet out of nowhere -- or perhaps even from the house next door -- sudden danger and death can descend. Yes, accidents happen, and everything normal, familiar and friendly whiplashes out of control as if hit by a tornado. It is hard growing up under any circumstances, but it is especially difficult surviving in the Conway home, a household more prone to mishaps and calamities than just about any other on their block. Sometimes the Conways are able carry on to fight another day, but sometimes they aren't.

On a hot summer evening, laughing while The Three Stooges hammer and pummel each other at the local drive-in seems like the perfect antidote at the end of a traumatic day. Until, that is, the Conways take the short ride home in this quiet New England town.

Yes, accidents happen. They happen all the time, especially to the Conways.

"Accidents Happen", a brash and moving comedy starring Academy Award® winner Geena Davis, exciting newcomer Harrison Gilbertson, and a talented ensemble cast that includes Joel Tobeck, Harry Cook, Sebastian Gregory, Erik Thomson and Sarah Woods, is the feature directorial debut of composer and short filmmaker Andrew Lancaster, recipient of numerous awards for his shorts (In Search of Mike, Palace Cafe). Brian Carbee's screenplay is inspired by his mother's unique way of expressing herself and the world he experienced growing up in Connecticut. Lancaster is joined by multi-award winning producer Anthony Anderson (Somersault) and executive producer Heather Ogilvie (Hey Hey It's Esther Blueberger, The Blackwater Lightship). The production team includes Emmy-nominated director of photography Ben Nott, ACS, recipient of the 2008 Excellence Award from the American Cinematographer's Society. Production design is by Elizabeth Mary Moore, costume design by Academy Award® Winner Ruth Myers and Nina Edwards, editing by Roland Gallois, with an original score by Antony Partos and musical collaboration from Luke Steele and Empire of The Sun.

The title sponsor for the event is Ayres and French Insurance. The series is also made possible by grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Sedona.

The film festival is proud to announce that this is "Member Appreciation Night" where Film Sedona Members are admitted free of charge as a way of thanking them for their year-round support and support of the recent film festival. The general public is also invited to both screenings.

"Accidents Happen" will be shown at Harkins Sedona Six Theatres on Tuesday, March 9 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. Film Sedona members are admitted free of charge. Tickets are $10 for non-member general admission and will be available starting at 3:00 p.m. that day in the Harkins lobby. Cash or checks only. Film Sedona members can reserve tickets in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office, 1785 W. Hwy. 89A, Suite 2B, or by calling 282-1177.
